5 Reasons You Should Never Give Up on Your Passion

Having hobbies or passions makes our lives richer and more fulfilling. Merriam-Webster defines passion as “a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something.” But what happens when that enthusiasm wanes? Unfortunately, passions sometimes have an expiration date; however, most of the time, it’s simply that the person runs out of steam and quits. In that case, we need to take a line from Rick Astley’s hit song and let our passions know we’re “never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you.” Yes, he was talking about love in the song, but the sentiment remains. Obviously, we all want to live a life without regrets and keep our minds productively channeled, but sometimes failure can impede our success and ultimately lead to us giving up. We can solidify our passions, though, if we can remember that it’s about the journey, not the destination and if we can continue to do it for the sake of inspiring others rather than quitting. So, today, let’s look at 5 reasons you should never give up on your passion so that you may fire your old self to make way for your new, best self and live your best life.

1. Living Without Regrets

Living without regrets is one of the most significant reasons why you should not give up on your passion. Although we all reflect on our journeys from time to time and think about what we could have done differently, you’ll want to eliminate this ‘what-if’ mentality to truly live a life without regrets. What if I never quit gymnastics when I was 12? What if I took that backpacking trip across Europe? What if I took the plunge and started my own business at 35? People who give up on their passion, perhaps without even a vigorous fight, are plagued by these kinds of ‘what-ifs.’ To truly live without regrets, you must chase your passions down, explore them to the fullest, and believe that it’s guiding you in the direction you’re meant to go. Once you find your passion, you will know because it will consume parts of your brain you didn’t realize you had, and it will sit there buzzing around until you give it the attention it deserves. Ultimately, to live your best life and one without regrets, listening to your passions and chasing them down will help you begin to mold yourself into the best version of yourself.

2. Keep Your Mind Productively Channeled

Another reason you should never give up on your passion is that they help to keep your mind productively channeled. For example, after a long day, we often just want to relax, switch on Netflix, and eat some food. However, with a passion or hobby, you’re far less likely to ‘check out’ whenever you have the chance. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes there’s nothing better than watching some garbage reality TV show on a Sunday afternoon, but there’s a time and place for everything. Personally, I notice that if I don’t have some projects or passions on the go, I feel untethered – like I’m moving from one thing to the next mechanically. But, when I have something to look forward to, I am much more excited, optimistic, and motivated to get through the mundane things to the fun stuff. Sometimes keeping your mind productively channeled can be challenging, especially if your passion is for your business or something similar and your enthusiasm is waning. In this instance, remind yourself who you are doing this for, how you felt at the beginning, and why you started in the first place. Oftentimes, we give up when things get hard, but by keeping your mind productively channeled, you can find a way to not quit on your passion and start building your best life so that you may love the life you live.

3. Failure is Imminent (and Important)

Although we never like to fail, failure is a significant part of success. We’ve all heard the famous Thomas Edison quote: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” If Edison had quit after the first, hundredth, or even thousandth try, we might not have modern electricity as it works today. All this is to say that failure is an imminent and important part of success. Though we may not see it this way at the time, failure can help point us in the exact direction we need to go next – and it’s about not getting discouraged by the failure but rather seeing it as another opportunity or doorway to success. Facing failure, overcoming it, and not giving up on your passion is one of the best ways to grow in all facets of your life. Many people don’t even begin to pursue their passion or dreams due to a fear of failure. However, growth only occurs outside of your comfort zone, so if you’re feeling uncomfortable, nervous, vulnerable, or scared, you’re doing it right! What’s meant to find you will always fall onto your path but only if you keep heading in the right direction. By remembering that failure is imminent and important to your success, you may find it easier to stay energized by your passion as you work towards molding your new, best self and living your best life.

4. It’s About the Journey, Not the Destination

As I mentioned above, trusting yourself and following your path will reveal unlimited reasons why you shouldn’t quit your passion. In other words, you must remember it’s about the journey, not the destination, and that hard work pays off over time. But also, it’s never too late to start anew with a passion. One example is model Maye Musk, who started modeling at 15 years old, dropped off for a while, and is now back modeling in her 70s! Since the beginning of her career, she has graced many covers, including Women’s Day, CoverGirl, and Vogue. She’s the true definition of ‘it’s about the journey, not the destination’ since she kept at it even though exemplars of advanced beauty aren’t usually featured in mainstream media nowadays. So, whether your passion is singing, crossword puzzles, skating, or cooking (the list goes on and on), do a little each day to advance yourself forward. Don’t worry about measuring progress – progress will come with attention and effort – just enjoy yourself because that’s the essence of passion – enjoyment. Sitting back and enjoying yourself will remind you that it’s about the journey, not the destination, and you’ll understand why you shouldn’t give up on your passion and how it can help you become your best self.

5. If Nothing Else, Inspire Others

Some of you may argue that continuing your passion for others doesn’t make sense – but hear me out. Sometimes all we need is that little extra push to get back in the right headspace. For example, suppose you loved dancing, but then you got pregnant, and eventually, it turned from a passion to a long-lost friend. A few years later, you and your toddler are relaxing and your favorite song you used to dance to all the time comes on. They begin to dance right away because it’s a catchy song… you’re not sure, but you begin to dance… and it’s like you never stopped. Your passion comes flooding back to you. Thereafter, you always dance with your toddler – perhaps even inspiring them to become a dancer one day. Even though this is a very specific example, you can see how it applies to many different situations and how following your passion allows you to inspire others. So, get out there, inspire your friends, family, and loved ones, share your passion with them, help them explore theirs – just don’t lose the magic that our passions give us. Sometimes all it takes is inspiring others with your passion to re-ignite the feeling within you so you can fire your old self to make way for your new, best self.

Final Thoughts

Passion is the fuel and motivation behind why we take on hobbies or extra projects. When we engage in something we are passionate about, we feel empowered to start thriving and living our best life. That’s why living a life with no regrets or ‘what-if’s and keeping our minds productively channeled is essential. When you’ve honed in on your passion, you can see that failure is imminent and important to the process and that it’s about the journey, not the destination. If all else fails, work with your passion to inspire others and watch it re-inspire you as well. In the end, be sure to never give up on your passions and your dreams because they pull you along the path you are meant to be on as long as you trust yourself and the process. Ultimately, integrating these 5 reasons you should never give up on your passion is crucial so that you may fire your old self to create your new, best self while remembering Life’s Short, Love the Life You Live!
